How has technology transformed transportation logistics?

9th May 2018

Transportation logistics is an industry that has been rapidly developing for several years now, with new and improved technologies emerging year upon year.

The transportation industry isn’t about just trucks getting from A to B anymore, it has been revolutionised by smart technologies providing GPS tracking, analytical data, and remote diagnostics. Companies don’t want to be left behind, so it’s important that they plan for these changes, especially when they become the norm and are widely used across the industry.

Technology will continue to become more advanced and make an impact on the transportation industry. Here are the main changes to be aware of:

Fleet management and GPS tracking

Knowing the exact location of every fleet will save time and money, whilst also providing outstanding service. Although GPS tracking has been used for years, it has improved in many ways. You can monitor driving habits, provide real-time updates to customers and obtain key metrics that will help optimise the overall efficiency and performance of the fleet.

Drones and driverless vehicles

Although the use of drones and driverless vehicles has not yet been widely adopted by companies, it may happen sooner than we predict. Driverless vehicles have already been piloted by many companies, and the semi-autonomous truck announced by Tesla last year has already been pre-ordered by big names such as Walmart. Driverless vehicles still have a way to go in terms of reliability and considerations would need to be made in regard to safety and insurance, however, they are definitely something to keep an eye on.

Whilst Amazon’s announcement of flying drone deliveries is extremely interesting, this is likely something that won’t filter into the transport industry any time soon. This is due to the drones being unmanned, the flying regulations, plus the safety and overall cost.

Internet of Things (IoT)

Having an IoT solution in place means devices are all connected across one network and can share their data. This allows for the conditions of a fleet to be monitored, such as the temperature and the overall visibility of the journey from beginning to end. It can also help with warehouse management to ensure things are in the right place at the right time. All of the data that is collected now can be used in many different ways to ensure a smooth journey that is efficient, effective and reliable.
