Logistics companies in the North East tackle skills shortage

20th January 2015

Logistics organisations are faced with an ageing workforce, with the average age of drivers 57 and only 2% of lorry drivers are under the age of 25.

Under additional EU test requirements, employers are increasingly finding that developing the skills of their current workforce will be the key to company growth.

According to a recent into the transport and logistics industry survey by the Road Haulage Association, over 70% of employers are suffering a driver shortage and a further 20% said they expected to do so soon.

In additional research, the UK Commission for Employment and Skills predicted that many logistics firms would be left behind if they fail to tackle these skills issues.

The research highlighted that a major issue for employers in 2015 will continue to be rapidly changing technology. Multi-skilled roles are now the norm and the desire to improve competitiveness and meet customer requirements means employers must look towards technologies to gain greater supply chain management efficiencies.

These include GPS systems and electronic signature scanners (already in use by OSE), together with problems such as more customer-facing work for the existing workforce, as well as difficulties recruiting new entrants.

OSE European provide same day and next day express pallet delivery services, as well as complete logistics, haulage, freight forwarding and supply chain management from Newcastle upon Tyne, in the North East of England.
