Santas freight ship arrives in the UK

11th December 2012

With over 1000 Santas sleighs worth of storage space, the worlds largest freight container ship has made its maiden voyage in Great Britain full of Christmas presents.

The 1299ft-long ship, named Marco Polo, flies the Red Ensign and is registered in the UK, and can carry more than 16000 containers measuring 20ft by 8ft.

The ship arrived into Southampton on Sunday packed full of goods from the Far East and then set off for Hamburg, Germany, later on Monday afternoon.

DP World Southampton, the operators at the port terminal, said,

The cargo will be consumable goods presents for Christmas, cars, games, toys and clothes. It would be anything you could buy on the high street.

The ship is expected to dock in Southampton every 11 weeks.

The ship, named after the Venetian explorer Marco Polo, is the first in a fleet of six super cargo vessels to be launched by French container ship operator CMA CGM.

The Marco Polo ship took the title of largest container ship afloat from Emma Maersk, which was built in 2006.
